Background to the Site

This web site started out when I discovered a Roll of Honour dedicated to the employees of a local coalmine. I idly decided that it would be nice to trace these men and discover where they were from and a little about them.

Naturally this started with a visit to the local memorial of my home town, located at the local recreation ground; and as little tied in with the names on the Roll so the search spiralled outwards to other local memorials.

The original intention became lost in a welter of information and the idea of attempting to visit all the memorials and record those began. This soon became linked with examining local papers of the era, and obtaining as much information about Staffordshire’s World War 1 servicemen as possible. This in turn resulted in the creation of this site.

Staffordshire’s servicemen served not only with the North and South Staffordshire Regiments but were also to be found in virtually every other regiment and service within the British and Colonial Armies.

Men from other counties also served alongside the men of Staffordshire in the two Staffordshire Regiments.

I feel strongly that all those persons who served should be remembered, whether they were lucky and returned hale and hearty, were wounded or sick; or died in the service of their country:

WE SHALL REMEMBER THEM.
